Girl charged in screwdriver death case

A 15-year-old girl, charged in connection with the killing of an elderly greengrocer, has been remanded in custody in Belfast.

65-year-old Harry Holland was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver in Norfolk Drive, west Belfast on Tuesday. He died the following day.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was been charged with affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

She appeared at Belfast Youth Court earlier this afternoon. A bail application by her lawyer was rejected by the magistrate after police warned of a risk to the girl's wellbeing if she was freed.

The accused made no reply when the two charges were put to her. She was remanded in custody to appear again at the same court next month.

Two 17-year-old boys remain in custody. Another teenage girl was released.
