Climate change committee holds first meeting

The Cabinet committee on climate change established under the terms of the programme for Government has met for the first time.

The committee was set up to examine how Ireland can meet its target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 3% per year.

It is chaired by the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, and includes the Tánaiste, the Ministers for Enterprise and Agriculture, Minister for Health Mary Harney and the three Green Party ministers, John Gormley, Eamon Ryan and Trevor Sargent.

Minister for Communications, Eamon Ryan, said afterwards that the committee would put the issues of climate change and energy security at the heart of Government action.

It is due to meet again in two months' time.
