Eamon Gilmore seems set to be elected unopposed as the next leader of the Labour Party, after Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan announced this evening that he will not be standing.

Mr Broughan thanked his family, friends and supporters who had urged him to take part in the contest, but said he did not believe he could mount a substantial challenge to Mr Gilmore.

He said he did not think such a challenge would be possible in the available time and circumstances of the aftermath of the recent General Election.

Nominations close at noon on Thursday, but so far Mr Gilmore, TD for Dán Laoghaire, is the only declared candidate.
