European share prices have recovered slightly after falling this morning as fears about the US economy continued to trouble world stock markets.

Dublin's ISEQ and the FTSE in London dropped by around 1% in early trading but later bounced back to be slightly higher.

Asian share prices had fallen sharply, with Tokyo's Nikkei index ending down 1.7% at 16,013. This came after a weak performance last night in the US, where the Dow Jones fell more than 2% to 13,042.

The fresh turmoil was triggered by bad news from the US. A research group said consumer confidence in the world's largest economy had slipped in August, while minutes released by the US Federal Reserve dampened hopes for an early cut in the main US interest rate.
