More than 200,000 young people are to be consulted by the Children's Ombudsman to identify issues and address problems that concern them.

The 'Big Ballot' will be a referendum-style event where those under 18-years-old will be asked to give their opinions on topics ranging from recreational services to childrens' law.

The Ombudsman for Children's Office says the ballot will be held across Ireland on the week commencing 5 November.

More than 1,000 primary and post-primary schools, as well as Traveller training and youth teach centres, have agreed to participate in the consultation process.
