Five die in separate road crashes

Five people have died in overnight road accidents. Three were pedestrians.

Five people have died in overnight road accidents. Three were pedestrians.

A man in his 50s died when he was hit by a car being driven by an off duty garda in Oughterard, Co Galway.

The accident happened at Glebe shortly before 2am this morning.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission is investigating the incident. 

In Cork, a 23-year-old man died after he was knocked down by a van on the South Ring Road in Togher.

That accident happened between the Kinsale Road and the Sarsfield Road roundabouts at around 3.30am.

The man who died was named as Alan Barry from Brookhill, Glanmire, Cork.

Donegal crash

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old woman was killed when she was struck by a car in Co Donegal this morning.

The accident happened at Dooballagh, Letterkenny, at around 4am.

She has been named as Lisa McMenamin from Corraine in Ballybofey Co Donegal.

And man died in a crash on the main Craughwell to Athenry road, in Co Galway, at 8am.

He has been named as 30-year-old Barry Kelly from Church Street, Athenry, Galway.

The Athenry to Craughwell road has now reopened.

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Co Galway are investigating the death of a man in a single vehiclecrash between Williamstown and Ballymoate.
