Japanese PM - party suffered defeat in polls

The Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, has accepted that his ruling Liberal Democratic Party has suffered defeat in polls for the upper house of parliament.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has accepted that his ruling Liberal Democratic Party has suffered defeat in polls for the upper house of parliament.

Mr Abe said that he had no intention of resigning.

The opposing Democratic Party of Japan is set to to become the largest party in the upper house for the first time.

Mr Abe's LDP party has suffered from a series of scandals since he took office ten months ago.
