Former Athlone IT lecturer Dr Niall McElwee is under investigation by gardaí.
Mr McElwee resigned his post earlier this month after it emerged he was convicted of a sexual offence in the Netherlands two years ago.
Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy confirmed today that gardaí are investigating whether or not he may have breached the Sex Offenders Act in Ireland.
The law requires people convicted of a sexual offence outside the State to notify gardaí if the crime is also an offence in Ireland.
It also requires such a person to inform their employer of the conviction.
Mr Conroy said gardaí were now examining the details of the conviction and whether the terms of the Act had been breached.
He said a superintendent was in charge of the investigation and a file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
