The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan, has said that following several years of difficulties there is now considerable optimism about the future in the dairy business.
Ms Coughlan said that profit margins for farmers and processors have improved considerably in recent months and there has been a shift away from European Union market supports.
The Minister was speaking at a forum in Dublin organised by he Department of Agriculture to help the industry develop in the coming years.
The forum is being attended by dairy business executives from all over the country and by leaders of the farm organisations.
