In the High Court, Mr Justice Paul Gilligan ordered that the money, which is in recognition of the State's acceptance of the findings of the Morris Tribunal, be paid within the next seven days.

However Mr McBrearty stressed he has not reached any settlement with the State.

Last night, he told RTÉ News he is disappointed that all court proceedings relating to his actions for damages will not be fully dealt with at a special court hearing next October.
