Seanad election counting will resume in Trinity College tomorrow morning where tallies show that Shane Ross is likely to top the poll followed by David Norris.

Ivana Bacik seems almost certain to win the third seat.

The tallies at the NUI count are suggesting Joe O'Toole will top the poll, with Ronan Mullen coming in second after the first count.

Three other candidates, including outgoing senators Feargal Quinn and Brendan Ryan, are also in the race for a seat. The other is Valerie Bresnihan. Meanwhile, the count in Leinster House is continuing.

So far, 17 senators have been elected. Fianna Fáil has nine seats, Fine Gael five, Labour two and Sinn Féin one.

SF wins first-ever Seanad seat

Sinn Féin last night won its first-ever seat in the Upper House of the Oireachtas, with Pearse Doherty being elected.

Mr Doherty and Labour's Alan Kelly were deemed elected to the agricultural panel. Before the election, Labour and Sinn Féin had agreed a voting pact.

Earlier in the day the five seats for the cultural and educational panel were filled.

Outgoing Fianna Fáil senators Ann Ormonde, Labhras O'Murchu and former TD Cecilia Keaveny were all elected.

Labour's Alex White and Fine Gael's Liam Twomey, who both contested the General Election, were also successful.

However, veteran Senator Paschal Mooney lost his seat.
