Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes said the raids followed a large number of complaints to his office about certain companies who send unsolicited texts to mobile phones.

A general investigation in advance of the raids was carried out with Regtel, the premium rate telecommunications regulator.

Mr Hawkes said his office would carry out further inspections where necessary and that he would be meeting with ComReg next week to discuss plans to prevent companies that break the law from getting access to mobile networks.
