A man has appeared at Portumna district court in Co Galway, charged in connection with a fatal stabbing in Nenagh Co Tipperary, last Sunday morning.

Carlos Ruja, 50, a Latvian man, living in Tullamore Co Offaly was charged with assault causing harm to Alexey Pekelman in Nenagh on 15 July.

Today's proceedings in court were conducted with the aid of a translator.

The accused man was remanded in custody to appear in court again tomorrow, when a bail application will be made.

The court was told that Mr Ruja made a written reply to the charge when it was put to him by gardaí at Nenagh Garda Station last night.

The court also heard the accused man had a stab wound to his stomach. A request that he receive all necessary medical care and attention in custody was granted by Judge Michael Reilly.
