The Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, has told the Dáil that the Green Party had not agreed to the construction of any waste incinerators.

He had been taunted during the debate by Fine Gael TDs over the planned incinerator for Poolbeg, which is in his own constituency.

Minister Gormley said the Poolbeg plan was now before An Bord Pleanála, so it would be inappropriate for him to comment on it.

Before tonight's Dáil debate, a spokesman for the Green Party said their policy is still to oppose incineration, which they say should not be the cornerstone of government waste policy.

The party tabled its own motion opposing the development last year.
