The number of people killed on the roads during the first half of the year is down by 39 compared to the same period last year.

In the latest fatal accident, a man was killed in a road accident in Kinnegad this morning. The single-vehicle accident happened on the N6 at around 10.40am.

The man who died was a passenger in the vehicle while the driver was taken to Mullingar Hospital.

It brings to 160 the number of people killed on the country's roads so far this year. That compares to 199 in 2006.

The Road Safety Authority says it is pleased with the downward trend, which it says is the biggest reduction in deaths so far this year.

The number of people who have died on our roads so far during the month of June is also the lowest figure recorded for this month since 1980.

The Chairman of the Road Safety Authority, Gay Byrne, said he believes road deaths are falling because people are driving better and are better at observing the rules of the road.

He say the overall attitude toward road safety is changing slowly but surely. However, he said people should not to become complacent.

The Road Safety Authority has warned that the coming month is the most dangerous of the year on our roads. An average of 40 people die in road accidents here every July.
