Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has expressed disappointment that the Northern Ireland Public Prosecution Service has insufficient evidence for further prosecutions in the case of murdered Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane.

The prosecution services announced yesterday that there would be no prosecutions arising out of John Stevens' three reports into collusion between Loyalist paramilitaries and the security services.

Mr Ahern told the Dáil that it did not alter the Government's stated position of the need for an independent inquiry to allay any concerns surrounding the Finucane case.

If anything, he said, it had added to the case for an independent inquiry.
