The United States has said it expects North Korea to shut down its controversial nuclear reactor, which is at the centre of suspicions that it could be used for the manufacture of nuclear weapons, in the next three weeks.

The US nuclear envoy, Christopher Hill, was speaking in Tokyo after a surprise visit to North Korea.

North Korea had agreed earlier this year to close its reactor, but there had been a dispute over frozen funds in a bank account in Macau.
