Lebanon is observing a day of mourning following the killing of an anti-Syrian member of the Lebanese parliament, Walid Eido.

The 65-year-old Sunni Muslim lawyer was targeted in a bomb blast near a Beirut beach club.

He had been an ally of the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, who was assassinated in February 2005.

Nine other people, including Mr Eido's eldest son, were killed in today's blast and 11 others were wounded.

The ruling majority in parliament has blamed Syria for the attack, saying it was in response to the establishment of a UN court to try suspects in political killings.

Syria has not commented on the attack.

US President George W Bush has led international condemnation of the killing. Iran has also condemned what it described as a 'terrorist act'.
