The newly elected Fianna Fáil TD, Mattie McGrath, has been before Clonmel District Court charged with assaulting two men.
Mr McGrath, who is from Newcastle Co Tipperary, is charged with assault, causing harm, and with using or threatening to use unlawful violence.
The charges follow an incident in Newcastle near Clonmel early on 14 August 2006.
The court sent the case forward for trial to the next sitting of Tipperary Circuit Court in Clonmel next month.
Deputy McGrath was released on his own bond of €3,000.
Six other men from the village, including Deputy McGrath's son, Edmund, face charges arising from the incident and have also been sent forward for trial.
Garda Superintendent Tom O'Grady told the court that an investigation into a complaint made by Deputy McGrath into the garda investigation of the case has been completed and is now with the Garda Complaints Board.
