A man has been arrested in Co Mayo tonight in the latest incident arising out of the controversial Corrib Gas project.
The arrest took place during an altercation at Pollatomish Pier when local people confronted Shell contractors who were attempting to locate a security cabin at the pier.
There were a series of running scuffles and gardaí and protestors clashed as the cabin was being put in place.
The man who was arrested was taken to Belmullet Garda Station.
The cabin is to be used by a boat crew which has been contracted to undertake a seabed survey in the area as part of Shell Ireland's attempts to find a new route for an onshore pipeline linking its offshore well to a €200 million refinery at Bellenaboy.
This latest confrontation comes on the eve of plans by Shell Ireland and its partner companies to announce details of a number of new route corridors along which the pipeline might be laid - if the agreement of local landowners can be obtained.
Details of the routes will be revealed at an information meeting in Belmullet tomorrow afternoon.
