The kidnapped BBC journalist, Alan Johnston, has appeared in an Internet video which was posted on an Islamist website this morning.

It is seen as a major development in the investigation into Mr Johnston's kidnapping in Gaza city last March.

Mr Johnston is being held by a group calling itself the Army of Islam.

Dressed in a red jumper, Mr Johnston said he was being well treated, but it is not clear when the recording was made.

Britain's Chancellor Gordon Brown has called on those holding Mr Johnston to release him 'as a matter of urgency'.

Britain's Foreign Office says it is urgently investigating.

Since his abduction, there have been intensive international efforts to secure Mr Johnston's release.

In the video, his kidnappers repeated their demands for Britain to free Muslim prisoners.

Mr Johnston meanwhile referred to what he called Israel's occupation of Gaza, and strongly criticised Britain's policies in Iraq and Afghanistan.
