The Dublin City Coroner has provisionally set 12 and 13 July as the date for the resumption of the inquest into the death of Terence Wheelock.
He was found hanging in his cell in Store Street Garda Station on 2 June 2005 after being arrested in connection with the unauthorised taking of a vehicle.
Forensic reports commissioned by the family found blood and vomit on his clothes.
Dublin City Coroner Dr Brian Farrell said there were legal difficulties in formally bringing the family's expert witnesses to testify at the inquest, but that he was anxious to facilitate as comprehensive an inquiry as possible.
He suggested the expert witnesses might be able to sit with the legal team to help frame questions for other witnesses.
The Wheelock family said they planned to lodge the findings of their own forensic tests with the Garda Ombudsman today.
The family's legal team is also now looking through a large amount of documentation in relation to the case received from the Department of Justice this morning under Freedom of Information.
