New Govt formation not clear: Kenny

watch

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has said it is not at all clear cut as to what Government will be formed in the coming weeks.

Mr Kenny said there is a clear message in the 20 seat gain made by the so-called Alliance for Change.

Mr Kenny claimed almost 60% of the people voted against the current coalition, and pointed to the fact that between them Fianna Fáil and the PDs lost nine seats.

He said it is a source of intense regret that Labour and the Greens did not get more seats.

The Fine Gael leader said very small changes in a number of constituencies could have got candidates elected.

Contact with the Greens

Mr Kenny said he will make contact with Green Party leader Trevor Sargent shortly and discuss matters with him.

He has flatly ruled out doing any deal with Sinn Féin and does not accept he has only an outside chance for Taoiseach.

Mr Kenny said he is 'really interested' in exploring the possibilities with the figures as they have stacked up.

According to the Fine Gael leader, restoring the party as a major political force in the land is testament to really hard work, dedication and great candidates.

He has no intention of stepping down as party leader, he said, and added he has already planned in his own mind where Fine Gael will win seats next time round.
