According to the charity Barnardos, nearly 50% of them are trapped in conditions so dire that they are missing out on the basic essentials.

It has urged both the new Stormont Executive and the Westminster parliament to intervene in an attempt to give such children a decent chance in life.

Barnardos found that the children most likely to be oppressed include those from lone parent families, ethnic minorities and those affected by disability.
