Fine Gael has published proposals to make Government more accountable, including the dismissal of ministers who are reckless with public money.

Deputy leader Richard Bruton claimed the current Government's hallmark was failure to deliver, with no culture of taking responsibility.

Mr Bruton said Fine Gael and Labour would no longer tolerate this approach to spending public money.

Under the plan, the Taoiseach and Tánaiste would set annual priorities for ministers and hold them accountable for achieving that.

It also proposes 50% more Dáil sitting days and a more open Freedom of Information system.

Labour calls for Govt accountability

Labour leader Pat Rabbitte said ministers ought not to have a way out of taking responsibility for their actions.

He said ministers should not be able to walk away from big decisions.

But he said Labour would not start sacking civil servants for incompetence, saying there were other avenues within the civil service for dealing with problems, including disciplinary procedures, promotions and bonuses.

Mr Rabbitte said this was an issue for the management of the department or public body concerned, but that politicians must be held democratically accountable for their responsibilities.

The Labour leader also said that while he had not discussed the matter with Enda Kenny, he would prefer to have the Taoiseach attend the Dáil and answer Leaders' Questions on Thursdays.

Under a deal agreed with Labour under his predecessor, the present Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, does not attend the Dáil on Thursdays.
