RTÉ has agreed to pay communications consultant Monica Leech €250,000 in libel damages.

Mrs Leech took a libel action against RTÉ's Liveline programme as a result of comments made on the radio show in December 2004.

In an apology read out to the High Court, RTÉ said comments were made in the course of the discussion suggesting Mrs Leech had secured well-paid State contracts by virtue of having an adulterous sexual relationship with Minister Martin Cullen.

Afterwards, Mrs Leech said she was very satisfied with the settlement but said it was very disappointing that it had taken RTÉ two and a half years to say sorry to her for the damage caused.
