Two men have been killed in a road accident in Co Westmeath.

The men, aged 19 and 32, died when their car went out of control and crashed near The Downs in Mullingar at around 2am.

A passerby managed to remove a 19-year-old man from the car. He had recieved serious injuries and is being treated in hospital.

The Road Safety Authority has renewed its appeal for road safety over the bank holiday weekend.

The RSA says speed is the number one killer on the roads and it is pleading with drivers, particularly young men, to keep their speed in check and not to drink and drive.

The agency says almost 60% of fatal crashes take place over weekends and over the past five years the May bank holiday has claimed 27 lives.

Road Safety Authority CEO Noel Brett has warned motorists that the authorities will be adopting a zero tolerance approach.
