President Mary McAleese arrived in New York last night on the second leg of her visit to the US.

There she will meet Irish emigrant groups and attend the American Ireland Fund gala dinner.

Yesterday, Mrs McAleese visited Syracuse University in New York state and laid a wreath at a memorial to the 35 Syracuse students who were killed in the Lockerbie bombing.

She also spoke to students and staff from its education faculty and law school on the theme of education and disability.

Syracuse is renowned for its work in integrating students of various abilities.

When asked about provisions for disability in Ireland, the president said there were now some very comprehensive laws in place but criticised the lack of sign language services at adult education courses.

Today she will visit several Irish emigrant centres in Queens, the Bronx and Long Island.

Tonight she will attend a performance of the musical 'The Pirate Queen' and tomorrow she will be guest of honour at the American Ireland Fund gala dinner.
