A man in his 40s from Derry has been charged in connection with the kidnapping of two people from Co Westmeath earlier this week.

The man and woman were later found in Derry. The woman had been assaulted and the man shot in the legs.

Marvin Canning, 45, was charged with seven offences at Derry Magistrates Court.

The charges are linked to the kidnap and assault of a man and woman who were taken from their home near Mullingar on Monday evening.

They were found in the Creggan area of Derry in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Both had been beaten and the man had been shot in the lower legs.

Mr Canning, from Glendara in Derry, was charged with the false imprisonment of Brendan Cranston, the kidnap of Mr Cranston, and with causing him grievous bodily harm.

He was also charged with the kidnap of Linda Docherty, falsely imprisoning and assaulting her and causing her grievous bodily harm with intent.

He also faced a further charge of possessing a firearm with intent.

Mr Canning denied any connection with the alleged offences during seven police interviews.

He was remanded in custody to reappear at the same court by a video link on 24 May.
