Parents were due to protest outside the Dáil this afternoon over the shortage of primary school places in the Dublin 15 area of the city.

Dublin 15 is located in the west of the city and is primarily made up of Blanchardstown and Castleknock.

The parents were expected to present a petition to the Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin, from families who cannot get a local school place for their children.

In a statement, Labour TD for the area Joan Burton said that for parents in the area the issue of school places was one of the most pressing ones in the run up to the General Election.

She said throughout Dublin West thousands of houses have been built over the past 10 years, but school places continue to be in short supply.
