On the final day of the IMO conference in Killarney, its president Dr Paula Gilvarry said doctors were already accountable to patients, the Health Service Executive and the medical council.

It will also mean inquiries into doctors can be held in public for the first time.

She said that health managers who have significant powers need to be more accountable.

Doctors have claimed that the Government is attempting to subvert the independence of the medical profession and its right to self-regulation.

The Minister for Health, Mary Harney, says the Medical Practitioners Bill will streamline the way complaints from patients about doctors are dealt with.
