Gardaí have seized a substantial quantity of cash and stolen property during planned searches in the Ballyporeen area of Co Tipperary.

The searches were conducted over the weekend.

The investigation is being coordinated by gardaí in Cahir as part of Operation Anvil, which was launched in May 2005 to target gun crime in the Dublin metropolitan region.

Gardaí from the Cork divisions and detectives from Dublin are assisting.

The searches were part of an investigation into a number of recent burglaries in the south Tipperary and north Cork areas.

It is believed the burglaries were carried out by a Dublin-based criminal gang.

Some reports suggest that the raids led to the discovery of a six-figure cash sum and jewellery stashed in open ground.

A garda spokesman said no arrests had been made but more searches were expected to be carried out in the coming days.
