Gardaí have arrested two men in Co Meath after a van carrying a consignment of cigarettes was held up and robbed in northwest Dublin.

A man armed with what appeared to be a handgun stopped the van and confronted two employees inside.

It happened at a filling station on the Snugborough Road in Blanchardstown this morning.

The van driver was forced to drive to a nearby location, where all the cigarettes were transferred to a transit van and the two employees were tied up and left in the back of the van.

They managed to free themselves and raised the alarm.

The Garda Organised Crime Unit later stopped a van at Johnstown, Co Meath, and arrested two men.

All the cigarettes were recovered.
