PSNI believes Belfast killings were linked

watch

The PSNI has said it now believes that the murders of two men in Belfast yesterday may be linked to tensions between dissident republicans.

Superintendent George Clarke confirmed that the man found shot in the head near a GAA club off the Falls Road was 36-year-old Edward Burns from Ardoyne in north Belfast.

The second victim, who was found beaten to death in an alleyway in Ardoyne, was 38-year-old Joseph Jones from Poleglass in west Belfast.

Meanwhile, trouble broke out at an interface area of north Belfast last night, close to the street where the badly disfigured body of Mr Jones was found.

Youths from nationalist and loyalist areas clashed and police where attacked when they arrived on the scene.

In recent weeks several violent incidents, including gun attacks, have taken place in north Belfast.
