Allegations to that effect are currently the subject of a police investigation.

The Attorney General for England & Wales obtained the injunction against the BBC at the Royal Courts of Justice in London on Friday.

Four people close to British Prime Minister Tony Blair have been arrested in the course of the enquiry, but none has so far been charged. Mr Blair has been questioned twice by detectives.

A statement issued on behalf of the attorney general and the Metropolitan Police said an application for an injunction was made because of concerns that the disclosure of certain information at this stage would impede police inquiries.

The BBC has said that its reporting of the 'cash for honours' story is a matter of public interest.

Labour's chairwoman, Hazel Blears, has said there was no political interference in the attorney general's decision.
