President Mary McAleese has given her seal of approval to a scheme which sees older people living in a Co Meath village give English classes to their newly arrived immigrant neighbours.

The President says she expects the 'Fáilte Isteach' project to be rolled out nationwide after its success in Summerhill.

The classes, being held at the Third Age Foundation centre in Summerhill, see retired volunteers tackle different topics each week.

Each volunteer gives up one night a week to teach courses on conversational English to foreign nationals living in the village.
