Britain considering US missile defence system

Updated: 16:25, Friday, 23 February 2007

Britain has confirmed that it is in discussion with the United States about the possibility of basing a US anti-ballistic missile system on British soil.

The British government says, however, that talks are at an early stage.

The US says it wants a missile defence against attacks from the Middle East or North Korea.

Russia has said the system will trigger an arms race.

It is believed the US has approached Poland and the Czech Republic about locating part of the missile system on their soil.
