Independent Newspapers is to seek a number of voluntary redundancies as part of a restructuring scheme affecting editorial production staff.

Independent Newspapers is to seek a number of voluntary redundancies as part of a restructuring scheme affecting editorial production staff.

The scheme is understood to involve the outsourcing of some editorial production or subbing work.

34 people are to be targeted in the scheme, with some staff eligible for payments of up to €250,000.

The National Union of Journalists has said its opposed to the principle of outsourcing and that it does not believe the redundancies are necessary.

The package offered equates to six weeks' pay per year of service, plus statutory redundancy, and is worth around €60,000 for people with one year service,
