Dept to cater for 100,000 extra children

Mary Hanafin has said her department expects to have to provide school places for an extra 100,000 children over the next six years.

The Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin, has said her department expects to have to provide school places for an extra 100,000 children over the next six years.

Ms Hanafin told the Dáil there are about 28,000 children now in Irish schools for whom English or Irish is not their first language.

She said 1,250 support teachers are employed to help them and others with language difficulties.
