Nearly all Irish businesses surveyed in a new report say they have experienced cybercrime.

Nearly all Irish businesses surveyed in a new report say they have experienced cybercrime.

Of the 42 companies surveyed, 98% said they had been the victim of some form of Internet fraud, and nearly a fifth of the companies surveyed said this had cost them more than €100,000.

40% say that employees have experienced harassment of some form on-line.

Viruses were the most common form of cybercrime - affecting nine out of ten companies and nearly two thirds of companies have had hardware or software stolen.

40% of the companies have either fired an employee or had one resign following an incident of cybercrime.

And 25% of the companies have contacted the gardaí - half of those cases resulted in a prosecution being brought.

The report, which was published by UCD and Information Systems Security Association, also found that employees in over half the companies were the victims of phishing, where criminals try to get confidential financial information.

It reveals that most cases of cybercrime are discovered accidentally, although a report author says that systems such as firewalls do enhance security.
