RTÉ News has learned that Mitchell Reiss, the US special envoy to Northern Ireland is to step down from his position at the end of the month.
He is to be replaced by Paula Dobriansky, currently serving Undersecretary of State for Domestic and Global Affairs at the US State Dept.
Mr Reiss is expected to make a pre-planned visit to Ireland later this month and will be accompanied by Ms Dobriansky.
The US State Dept is expected to confirm the appointment later today.
