A court in Austria has ordered the release on probation of the controversial British historian, David Irving, who had been serving a prison sentence for denying the Holocaust.

He had been convicted of Holocaust denial, which is a criminal offence in Austria, last February in a case that sparked a debate about free speech.

In a speech in Austria in 1989, he denied the existence of gas chambers at Auschwitz, although he later said he was mistaken.
