The jury in the trial of the Mayo farmer Padraig Nally has been told it may retire to consider its verdict tomorrow or the following day.

Mr Nally is charged with the manslaughter of John 'Frog' Ward on 14 October 2004.

Mr Ward, a father of eleven who lived at a halting site in Galway, died after being shot and beaten by Mr Nally.

Today, the jury at the Central Criminal Court heard further details of Mr Ward's criminal convictions.

The jury heard that at the time of his death, Mr Ward was awaiting trial for an incident where he allegedly threatened gardaí with a slash hook.

Of the 80 or so criminal convictions Mr Ward had, most were for District Court offences. Two convictions were from the Circuit Criminal Court for burglary and larceny.

There were four warrants in existence for his arrest, but gardaí did not execute them as he was being treated in a psychiatric hospital in Galway.

The court was adjourned shortly before 3pm this afternoon.
