The Sinn Féin Spokesman on Justice, Gerry Kelly, has received a warning from the PSNI that he is under threat from dissident republicans.

In Stormont this morning, Mr Kelly produced details of a PSNI message that dissident republicans were planning to carry out some form of attack against him in the near future.

He said he would not be deflected from his work by threats.

Mr Kelly is attending a meeting of a six-member sub-group at Stormont in an effort to break the deadlock over policing in Northern Ireland.

The group is expected to spend the next four weeks trying to agree when justice and policing powers can be transferred to a future Stormont power-sharing executive.

The DUP, Sinn Féin, the Ulster Unionists and the SDLP are all taking part in today's meeting.

The policing sub-group of the Stormont Preparation for Government Committee has until 3 January to come up with proposals.

Opposition to DUP power-sharing plans

In Co Armagh last night, up to 80 people attended a rally called to oppose the idea of the DUP sharing power with Sinn Féin.

The main speaker was the UK Unionist Assembly member, Bob McCartney.

The meeting was held at Carleton Street, Portadown, which was a rallying point during the dispute at Drumcree.

Mr McCartney suggested that DUP leader Ian Paisley was moving towards the political establishment. He referred to Mr Paisley's wife, Eileen, becoming a member of the House of Lords and the DUP leader being photographed with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern at St Andrews.

The gathering included a former DUP representative who left the party after a selection dispute, a DUP election agent who said he would be resigning his party membership, and Willie Frazer, who was involved in the Love Ulster Rally in Dublin earlier this year.

One speaker talked of the DUP's 'immoral compulsion' that would put murderers in government.

If there is to be an Assembly election in March, this coalition to the right of the DUP will oppose Mr Paisley.
