Members of the public have until the end of today to make sure they are registered to vote in the next election in the Register of Electors.

However, if your name is not on the register when it comes into effect, you may still make a late application for inclusion in a supplement to the register which is published prior to polling day.

The Draft Register has been published and is available for examination online and at post offices, public libraries, garda stations and council offices.

The public can check the register at www.checktheregister.ie.

The deadline for applying to be included on the Electoral Register was extended by Environment Minister Dick Roche until today after it emerged thousands of voters had been inadvertently removed.

Mr Roche was forced to change his mind and give the public an additional two weeks.

The U-turn followed pressure from the Opposition, Fianna Fáil back benchers and local authorities, three of which asked for extra time. Local authorities have since been given until 29 December to update and finalise their data.

In recent months there has been major drive to ensure all eligible voters are registered after serious errors with the Electoral Register were uncovered.

Local authorities were given €12 million to address the problem, but as the November deadline approached it emerged errors still existed.

More than 370,000 names were added and over 500,000 names were deleted.

But some people, including two TDs, had their names removed inadvertently.
