Irish drug smugglers get 34 years in UK

Two Irish men found guilty of smuggling drugs into Britain have been jailed for a total of 34 years.

44-year-old Vincent Gerard Sweeney, who has an address in Ballytivnan, Sligo, was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment while Robert McGowan, 38, from Cartron Estate, Sligo, was given a 18-year sentence.

Canterbury Crown Court heard that in March this year an Irish-registered horsebox vehicle was intercepted by Customs Officers at the Eastern Docks in Dover. 

25kg of heroin and 600kg of cannabis resin were found in a hidden compartment. It is believed the drugs were destined for Ireland.
