A campaign to combat the stigma and discrimination faced by Irish people living with AIDS was launched in Dublin this morning to mark World Aids Day.

Three million people have died worldwide this year from illnesses associated with HIV/AIDS.

Since January, half a million children have become infected with HIV.

The United Nations has said India now has the world's highest number of HIV infections, with an estimated 5.7 million people carrying the virus.

India has overtaken South Africa, which has 5.5 million people who are HIV positive.

The former US President, Bill Clinton, whose foundation is active in fighting HIV, described India as the new epicentre of the global epidemic.

The Executive Director of UNAIDS, Peter Piot, said those in power should be held accountable over how they performed in responding to the epidemic.
