Sarkozy to seek French nomination

The French Interior Minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, has formally announced that he wants to be the centre-right's candidate in next year's presidential election.

His UMP party is due to select its candidate in January and President Jacques Chirac is not expected to seek a third term.

The Socialist Party has picked Segolene Royal, who is attempting to become France's first woman president.
