The Russian Embassy in Dublin has said there was no threat to the life of the former Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar, who fell ill at a conference in Maynooth last week.

Mr Gaidar spent last Friday night at the James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown before discharging himself on Saturday.

He was diagnosed as suffering from gastroenteritis.

A spokesperson for the Russian Embassy said that his medical report states that his life was not under threat.

He is now under observation at a clinic in Moscow.
