An inquest into the death of 19-year-old Cobh teenager Sheola Keaney has been told by Dr Margaret Bolster that Sheola died of asphyxia due to manual strangulation.

The Coroner's Court in Cobh was told by Det Garda Tom O'Halloran that while searching Newtown in Cobh, Co Cork, on 16 July, he saw plastic bags underneath hedge clippings and a number of metal bars.

On examination of the bags, they found the body of a young woman, later identified as that of Sheola Keaney.

Coroner Frank O'Connell adjourned the inquest indefinitely following an application from the State.

In adjourning the inquest, Mr O'Connell addressed Sheola's father, Peter, and other family members and said that if there is a full criminal trial where all the facts are aired in public, it would not be normal for him to reopen the inquest.

However, he added he would be open to submissions from anyone who might think there are special circumstances.

The coroner offered his condolences to the family.
